MessageMr. Speaker,

We support this bill wholeheartedly. As we argued last time this bill was proposed, in order to ensure swift responses in the event of a disaster of some sort, a national grid is necessary.

OOC: Experts think the power outages in Texas last winter were as bad as they were primarily because Texas had its own regional grid that couldn't be connected to the rest of the country fast enough.

MessageMr Speaker,

Is the relationship between the Provinces that bad that they can't cooperate themselves? Has the Federal Government demonstrated that it is better at providing services than the Provinces? This fixes a problem that doesn't exist and potentially makes it even worse.

MessageMr. Speaker,

Provinces are able to work together, but if their grids are separate from one another, then the two provinces involved still have to agree on a way of doing it and then get it done, which is not a difficult task in terms of necessary cooperation, but can be very difficult in terms of actually getting the grids physically connected during an emergency bad enough to knock out a region's power supply. Even if it wasn't difficult, both stages of the process take unavoidable time, whereas if the grids were connected and under federal control in the first place, that preparation wouldn't be necessary.
