Bill: UFP-14: Essential Tax
Details
Submitted by[?]: United Future Party
Status[?]: defeated
Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.
Voting deadline: October 5235
Description[?]:
Currently the sales tax on essential items is set at 0%, this bill will increase it to 1%. This will bring in some more income into the national budget. While it may not increase our revenues by billions hopefully it will hopefully increase our surplus. While some may be against increasing the Sales tax on essential items I feel like it’s something that we may need. While it may not increase by a lot we hope that this can hopefully allow us to increase the budget on some departments that may need more funding or that we should improve. Chris Jones, Minister of Finance |

Message | We oppose any taxation on essential goods, for those living on the margin a few HLR can have a real impact. We support higher corporate taxes and higher income taxes on the wealthy instead. - Ruth Williams, Sol-WP Spokesperson of Economy |

Message | While we understand the concerns of the Solidarity - the Workers' Party about how it may affect some who are living on the margin. This tax is a small increase and while it really isn't that much, this tax could be raised to 5 or 7 percent and if it was raised that much then yes I would agree that it shouldn't be raised. This is only an increase of 1% which won't affect people too much unless they are buying in larger quantities. As to higher corporate taxes, it is also proposed to raise them by 1% also. Message | Mr. Speaker, We cannot in good faith support a tax on essential goods. We would be supportive of a modest increase to the luxury goods tax as an alternative measure. Jason Alexander Senator for Prosperity Hills West Leader of the Progressive Conservative Party |

Message | Mr. Speaker, We re-iterate the PCPH position, in that the budget could be supplemented by Luxury Taxes instead of essential tax. We thank the Minister for his hard work behind the scenes to implement our much-needed reforms. Tom Thomas Prime Minister |
