Message | This bill is only designed make a minor amendment to the current law to take into account the possibility of major emergencies and civil unrest that go beyond the ability of the police. This is not a route to military control over the population. |

Message | We have opposed this measure in the past and will continue to do so. Military units are not trained in emergency response, and they would contribute nothing to such efforts. We prefer to maintain a strict demarcation in the duties of the military, so as to allow for no ambiguity and no possibility whatsoever for martial law. |

Message | I can understand the fear of martial law and accept such criticism, however I would be in favour of suggesting that the military should be trained for such emergencies in order to make this new system work. This is a 'just in case' measure designed to ensure that the police are never overwhelmed in the event of mass civil unrest. |

Message | We are somewhat unsettled by the term "mass civil unrest." To what do you refer? |

Message | It was simply an example, such as the riots in France. These things can happen. I was really trying to emphasise the fact that by allowing the military to give assistance in times of emergency that it allows the use of a massive amount of man power, all of whom are trained to deal with high pressure dangerous situations e.g terrorist attacks, natural disasters etc. (I accept that they currently do not have the specific training for these situations but they should be trained to cope with anything.) |
Date | 20:31:33, July 05, 2006 CET | From | Liberal Party | To | Debating the Military aid to the police |
Message | The riots in France were due to a massive buildup of racial and socioeconomic tension, and with Chirac's policies, France is lucky that the riots happened when they did instead of having the emotions that fed them festering and growing in the present environment, only to explode with even greater force in due time. It is my guess that everyone can determine our position on this issue, and we will refrain from making a spectacle and arguing the point incessantly. Our philosophy is this: the military has no place doing the job of the police, and it is a breach of both good governance and human rights to call the armed forces into civil disputes. |
