Bill: Amnesty: Closing the Wounds of the Past
Details
Submitted by[?]: Christian Democrats
Status[?]: defeated
Votes: This bill is a resolution. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.
Voting deadline: June 2270
Description[?]:
"Under this proposal, we urge the Assembly to pass a law granting amnesty to all prominent leaders who were active during the recent civil war. Picking and choosing which leaders to prosecute will only re-open the wounds of the past. Furthermore, the Minister of Justice has suggested that private individuals be permitted to hold their own trials. This is vigilante madness and exactly the sort of thing we hope a general amnesty will prevent. "Figures covered by this amnesty would include, but not be limited to, Shih Kao, Mr Don, Bryce Leigh, Jonah Mallory, Jaques Phargle, Chris Konigsberg, the head of the Democratic Industrialists, and the leaders of the loyalist KGP. "The new government has shifted in wild and strange directions, including burning our forests and randomly dismantling programs. We hope the Assembly sees that the wiser course is to act in a responsible and retrained manner. Do not forget that all leaders agreed to the ceasefire that ended that war, and that even Jonah Mallory (the only leader singled out by the Assembly) stepped aside when the Assembly elected a new cabinet. Let us not re-open any old wounds. Let us let our nation heal. "I might also ask . . . do I need to be covered by this Amnesty?" -- Kyle Douglas |

Message | "We are not convinced of the wisdom of an absolute amnesty. However, we agree that, for the most part, we should proceed cautiously and we should not seek to punish people just for the sake of punishment. For example, although all members of the former "Green Party of Western Meria" have been expelled from our party, we have no desire to see the membership or leadership of that misguided movement punished further. Their isolation and insignificance is punishment enough." - Bill Power |

Message | "As for Jonah Mallory, we feel a lifetime ban on running for any political office in Keymon would be an appropriate response to his actions during the crisis. However, we would suggest this ban could be effected by a resolution of the legislature, along with the support of the Grand Duke. I see no need for a courtroom trial." - Bill Power |
