Message | We're opposed to Article 2 as we believe litigation or the threat thereof is a sufficient deterrent to publishing proven falsehoods. As well, what defense would the media have if it were duped by someone with an interest in promoting the falsehood. As a hypothetical example, if a respected government official told the media a company was polluting a source of drinking water, but government records show said company had never been accused of such activity, would the media be punished under the law for that? We appreciate that the JLSP only wants the truth to be published, but we fear it could open the proverbial can of worms. We're skeptical of Articles 3 and 4 as well, as we do not believe violent pornography has a place on television. We could go along with Article 3 if Article 4 were deleted to leave in place restrictions on the times sexually explicit material can be shown. |
