Bill: New Keymon: Child Labor Safety

Details

Submitted by[?]: Christian Democrats

Status[?]: defeated

Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.

Voting deadline: May 2298

Description[?]:

"With the second consecutive election victory for Keymon's socialists, I propose we restart the New Keymon initiatives that were destroyed when Mr Simmons' regime first came to power. The lame duck Director General cannot stop us this time, and we can reform Keymon for a better future. The first propose I sent to the Assembly is this one, and I hope this law will pass and bring Keymon into the 23rd century before the 24th continues to shame our child labor situation."

Message"We do not consider a person in Keymon an adult until they are 18 yet education is compulsary only up to age 16. If this law were passed in would create a two year vacuum in which students could legally leave school but could not legally start working. This not only means individuals that could be furthering our economy are not doing so but it also leaves a dangerous time period in which they are more likely to be open to illegal drugs or other immoral activities. Furthermore many local farmers have spoken to me talking of how they need their children, having left compulsary education, to work on their farms and to learn the family business. We have a deep support base in the traditional Buddhist labourers of the land and are not prepared to allienate them with a bill like this.

In conclusion we will not support this bill at the present moment and will only support a ban on child labour if the school leaving age and the age at which one is considered an adult are brought into line, we suggest lowering the latter to 16."
