MessageDoes the FFP really consider the morning breakfast show on our national radio station to be culture? If so, surely we should nationalise newspapers as well.

MessageWe have no interest in "nationalizing" any media. We do, however, feel that there is value in having public media available. The morning breakfast show is only part of what our public media offer, and the diversity of programming possible is far greater than what would be available if market forces and mass trends were to be the sole governing forces over our media offerings. We reject the notion that the value of something can be assessed based only on its popularity. After all, one can scarcely remember the top 40 lists on pop radio from ten or even five years ago, but the enduring value of cultural achievements from centuries past and present continue to be celebrated through public media.

MessageAs a matter of fact, yes it is. The importance of independent public media cannot be underestimated, whether it's simply to provide a source of news and information that doesn't have to pander to sponsors or the lowest common denominator, or providing a platform for our own artists, our own productions, our own shows.

MessageCulture is much more than museums and symphonies -- it is institutions, ideas, habits of thinking. If culture is to be preserved, it is vital that we have a diversity of information available to the people. This bil will give the people less choice, not more -- as the regressive force of the market is brought to bear on the airwaves and sense is replaced by sensationalism. This bill must be resisted, and opposed.
