Description[?]:
Partido da República (Party of the Republic) was established in September 4249 as Aliança da Esquerda Verde (Alliance of the Green Left), a left-wing environmentalist party. Due to a string of poor electoral performances the alliance reformed following the March 4277 election to become Movimento Popular do Tukarali (Popular Movement of Tukarali), a centrist catch-all movement. In the subsequent March 4280 election MPT lost over two million voters despite a higher turnout prompting the resignation of its leader, Valentina Gusmão. In April 4280 the party's executive and membership voted overwhelmingly to return the party to its environmentalist roots, adopting a centrist-green platform under the leadership of Anita Pires. Following the election of March 4284, Partido Verde was disbanded as an act of political protest against the far-right Partido Nacional which was widely accused of corruption and vote-rigging. During this period of absence from the political stage party members focused their efforts on social campaigns, mass protests and civil disobedience. In May 4303 Partido Verde was re-established as Partido da República by right-leaning former members of Partido Verde, Raul Fernandes (the grandson of former President Márcia Tavares Sykes) and Professor André Figueroa and Professor Luísa Nakata of the Economics Department of Universidade de Estaba. In its current format the party has shifted towards a centre to centre-right platform and aims to be "a serious and pragmatic party fit for government". A commitment to a rigid environmentalist ideology has been dropped and a new flexible and open-minded approach to policy has been adopted. In the words of Raul Fernandes, "the party is no longer fixated with policies which have consistently turned off voters and lost us votes. We are not a bunch of student protesters anymore - we are serious mainstream politicians." Following the May 4312 elections the party won enough seats to form a majority government for the first time in its history. |
