Bill: Post Office Creation Act of 2368

Details

Submitted by[?]: Moderate Republican Party

Status[?]: defeated

Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.

Voting deadline: November 2368

Description[?]:

Under current law, Jakania's mail delivery system is erratic and chaotic due to the lack of government standards on post offices. Any postal agency can exist under the present legislation and their services are completely unregulated. This proposal calls for the creation of a national post office to eliminate these problems. All Jakanian citizens will benefit from the enactment of this bill as they will be provided with a consistent and reliable mail service. Private post offices are also permitted to exist to provide restricted services such as package delivery.

MessageI dunno. In our admittedly limited experience, it seems like organizations like UPS and FedEx tend to be more reliable than the USPS, not to mention a better bargain. Of course, the mailperson who delivers to our house is nice. Also, cute. But that is no basis for a decision on national policy! Ergo, our libertarian principles, yadda yadda, you know the drill.

MessageWow, for once, me and the SLP seem to agree on something! Yeah, when he says that companies such as UPS and FedEx are better, I agree with him on that(means I vote no)

MessageA public postal system is a benefit to society and for the betterment of the people. It provides an organized and uniformal system which is implemented throughout the nation. This way, there aren't thousands of privatized companies that are for profit. The Federal Government isn't for profit, it uses its tax payer's money for the people's benefit.

If there are numerous companies, delivery dates would be uncertain. With the Public Postal Service, arrival dates are nearly always on time (with the exception of government holidays). How are private postal serivices a better bargain? The Public Postal Service is tax money, so there are no competitive fees which will not hinder the service for the people. Tax money is already going to be paid, so why not fund a program that is in the people's interest?

For a real life example, in the United States there is the United States Postal Service (as mentioned before) that works in circulation throughout the entire country. The service provided by this public insitution arrives every day. There are organized deliveries accessable to the people. If an individual wishes their mail to be sent in with more haste, they can do so by paying a minor fee just like at the privatized companies. In the U.S. the government also controls the amount of money paid for the postal regulation service (envelope stamps, etc.) So, it makes sense that the government delivers the mail becuase they in due also regulate the amount it costs. Also, the examples mentioned by both parties are not particularly ideal. The reason being, FedEx and UPS do not deliver mail, only packages and items in that area. So, there is no better bargain when speaking about the mail.

This legislation also regards amending a potentially dangerous law. Right now, the postal service is unregulated. So, for example, anyone can send another person Anthrax in a letter and the services (government, company, etc.) cannot intervene. Anything may be sent without detection.

AND, this will not rid FedEx and UPS. This will make it so citizens have the choice in whether they would like to use a public or privitized service. It clearly says "There is a nationalised post office agency. Private post offices are allowed to exist but the services provided by them are regulated" so you still have the choice to choose which service you want. We don't understand what the problem is with letting people choose what they want. So, we'll direct this to the opposition. What's wrong with letting people choose their service? You're laisez-faire, you want people to choose which service they are provided with. That's free market and capitalist.

MessageThe M.R.P. graciously thanks the L.D.P. for its backing. They make many good points in their well-constructed argument. The USPS is also very reliable for the M.R.P., and it delivers mail through rain, sleet, snow, or shine. Every citizen should be entitled to govenment services such as reliable mail delivery or police and fire protection since they pay taxes. Also, permitting the existance of only privatized post offices can prove detrimental for citizens seeking a reliable mail service. For example, one private postal agency could only deliver mail to one region of the country while another private company could only deliver mail to another region. If two people from these two regions desire to send mail to each other, it may not be accomplished.

If the J.C.P. and the S.L.P. wish to provide no services to the people, they might as well quit this game since there would be no meaning to govenment.
