Message | Voluntary ID cards seem a bit useless - I'd prefer mandatory ID, as that must aid fighting crime. Electronic and biometric ID cards should be a starting point. |

Message | We currently have ID cards but if I recall correctly I'll hunt for the bill later, they are neither electronic, nor do they contain biometric data. The latter we would consider to be extremely intrusive and we would oppose such an action. I believe that they did used to be mandatory though. |

Message | If they are voluntary, what is the point in them? |

Message | True, we should either issue mandatory ID cards or we have none, we should not be on any middle ground. We support this proposal because we believe that ID cards would be an invasion of privacy. |

Message | In what way? These days, you have to identify yourself too - with a drivers' license or other forms of ID. Might be easier if these IDs would be combined in one ID card. |

Message | Why do you need to identify yourself HSC? The only times people need identification is when they have a real reason and they will then carry some sort of ID like you say, a driver lisence. RL - I have NEVER had to provide ID once in my life. The occassions are rare. Therefore when people have legitamite ID in a passport why do they need to carry another form? |

Message | Well, there are people around without a driver's license. Identification? How did you ever subscribe to university or other schooling? Open a bank account? Get your drivers' license? Prove to cops who you were when controlled? |

Message | Birth certificate? Your not suggesting that some people don't have them are you? |

Message | A citizenship card, voluntarily offered, might be a good thing to have. If this passes, then no one would be required to have a birth certificate, which is, after all, a form of ID. That could cause problems. Our caucus is still undecided, but leaning towards "no." |
