Bill: Equal taxation = equal representation

Details

Submitted by[?]: Ikradonian Faith Party

Status[?]: defeated

Votes: This bill asks for an amendement to the Constitution. It will require two-thirds of the legislature to vote in favor. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.

Voting deadline: April 2131

Description[?]:

While citizens in Ghorva province pay as much taxes per capita as those in Mekarali province, they do not get their fair share of representatives in the National Assembly. With this bill, we wish to amend the constitution to guarantee equal representation for all.

MessageAs I highly doubt that corporate taxes of each province would be equal, as the budget currently shows, if economy was actually working, I'm going to have to disagree. Also, what you're proposing is that the rich should have more votes than the poor, which we find rather distressing.

MessageThe UPI will support this measure. We believe that the rural areas of Ikradon have been systematically denied importance based on their comparitively few seats in the legislature. The Chancellor will still primarily campaign in the larger provinces like Mekarali, but smaller regions like Ghorva will not be ignored by the legislature.

MessageIn an ideal democracy, each candidate for a seat in the National Assembly represents an equal number of citizens. For this reason, more densely populated areas of the nation should have a higher number of seats per unit area than the less densely populated areas. Villagers should not be allowed to shout louder than town-dwellers purely because there is a greater distance between houses.

Not wanting to appear pedantic but comparing current legislation with that proposed is like comparing apples and oranges. Any weighting algorithm should be based purely on population and NOT on region size. Ideal legislation would read :

"A proportional algorithm that gives a very small advantage to more populated regions"

MessageWe assume the NHP will support our bill then? After all, 'equal representation regardless of region population' means that villagers and town-dwellers have an equal say in parliament.

MessageUmm, no. We believe that each person, not each region, should be represented equally in Parliament.

OOC: This would set up our parliament like the U.S. Senate, where each state gets two representatives regardless of the population of the state.

Random fact: In Culturally Protected nations, it is the responsibility of players to ensure the candidate boxes on their Party Overview screens are filled in with appropriate names. If a player is allotted seats in a Cabinet bill and has not filled in names for the relevant candidate position, then the program will automatically fill in the positions with names which might not necessarily be appropriate for the Cultural Protocols.
