Message | We support the idea that every family deserves government aid in raising their children. But given our already very extensive welfare program, the IFP will support this bill. Once our economy is doing better, we can consider expanding child benefits to all families. |

Message | Although we don't necessarily hold the same view as the IFP on this matter, we do still want to ensure that none of our population is below the poverty line. We will support this proposal as long as we also ensure that the level of benefit is not so much as to encourage any delay in a payee seeking gainful employment to cover the cost of bringing up their own children. For this reason, child benefit should be provided to only to families where the total income is equal to or below minimum wage with the following rates applying : - Maximum benefit goes to single parents for the first 12 months following the birth of the child in question. - Benefit is gradually reduced after 12 months until the child is 4 years old. - Minimum benefit applies where the household income is equal to minimum wage and the child is between the ages of 4 and 16. |
