Bill: Smart Warfare
Details
Submitted by[?]: Ikradonian Faith Party
Status[?]: passed
Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.
Voting deadline: October 2185
Description[?]:
The IFP is proud of the pacifist nature of the DRI, but we also feel there is a limit to that. Currently, we have the policy of immediately sending back any prisoners of war we make. What this means is that they will arrive in the aggressor's barracks, get new weapons and be sent back across the border to kill more Ikradonians. This is senseless. We propose keeping the prisoners imprisoned until the end of the conflict. They will be treated according to international standards. |

Message | Our current policy may actually encourage soldier to surrender more readily as they know they will be sent home instead of being locked in some cell. We don't think it puts us in any kind of unnecessary risk more than what war already is. |

Message | We are confused by the IFP's lack of consistency on the issue of national defense. In another context, it suggested that all defense industries should be banned. But here, it argues for a more aggressive POW posture. We wonder why the IFP is concerned with prisoners of war while it also seems to be in support of creating an Ikradon whose defensive capabilities are crippled. Prisoners of war are a moot point if we don't even have the wherewithal to stand up against an invading enemy, much less to capture their soldiers. |

Message | We can always import weapons and technology when a conflict is on the horizon. This bill is aimed at stopping a policy that tells possible aggressors: "Sure, come and invade us. Even when caught, your soldiers will just be put across the borders, ready to join the fight once more." |

Message | The UPI has perhaps the most pro military stance in Ikradon we have always voted for a strong military, with the tools and manpower to defend our nation. But war isn't about soldiers, war's about money. And a soldier's life is worth a lot less than a jet or a tank. If we can capture enemy artilery, weapons, and computers, and all we need to do this is to promise that we'll return home their sons and daughters that we capture alive (this doesn't stop us from shooting those who continue to bear arms against us) then that's what we shall do. We return them to their country after we gain their assurance that they will not return to fight against us before the cessation of hostilities, while this is a promise that can be treacherously broken, even if it is broken, the military significance is minimal, as the soldier's training and therefore their life's value to their government, is worth perhaps a quarter of a percent the value of a tank. Also, we have the advantage that it is very hard to paint us as monsters, or human rights violators if we keep sending them home when they throw up arms. We might even get some defectors out of this. It's just a damn good policy. And those who can't see it are short sighted and foolish. ---Steve Cannon, UPI Defense Advisor |
