Message | May I ask how much this will cost - i.e. how much we will need to increase the state transport and infrastructure budget by? May I also ask can the Green Party guarantee that people who have jobs with the private TOCs be integrated into the new nationalised TOC should this law pass and they will work with the government to acheive this? Message | Mr Blowhart, Firstly, the whole point of nationalizing the railways is that so it's run for the passengers and workers. However, because it will be in public ownership it will be up to the Government to decide whether to allow these people continued employment. But the Greens will obviously be willing to work with them on this very important issue. As for the cost, if you include the basic effects of nationalization, protecting workers' jobs and the necessary investment (maintenance, improvements/construction, branding, etc.), the cost should be $300,000,000. For a railway of truly global standards that works for both passengers and workers, these measures are necessary. Peter Woods, BDGP Infrastructure and Transport Spokesperson |

Message | Thank you Mr Woods. Should we not carry out feasibility studies first to ensure we can offer employment to all the people in the private TOCS before putting this legislation in place? It may be we should stage the privatisation to nationalisation in stages to prevent job losses or run things as a joint venture company for a transitional period. My own thoughts are that the change would be best done in gradual law change stages to minimise the impact on jobs. Casper Blowhart. |

Message | We understand your concerns Mr Blowhart. It's to our belief that once this bill passes, the nationalization process won\'t happen immediately. Rather, this should be a process that takes place over a year in which discussions between the companies, unions and Government takes place to minimize any effects. During the negotiations things are run as they currently are. This kind of gradual implementation should help everyone involved whilst also quickly bringing the railways into public ownership. Message | Mr Woods, Again. Thank you. As you can see by the vote this is a completely divisive issue but at the end of the day we all want the same thing: the trains running on time and job security for employees. As this is going to pass I suggest you put together a white paper based on your ideas and share this with the government and the Transport Minister so we can share best practice on implementing this overhaul. Message | As requested, I have released a white paper explaining my party's ideas and viewpoints, and how we believe would be the best way to get this plan into motion. I hope the Government takes our findings into account: http://classic.particracy.net/viewbill.php?billid=503395 Peter Woods, BDGP Infrastructure and Transport Spokesperson |
