| Message | Bonaparte Desrosiers, Leader of the Congress of the Left: Mr. Speaker, Let me say that I could not be more ashamed of the Government for their support of this legislation- considering it was not all that long ago that the NDP voted in FAVOR of expanding the role of the public in power generation to provide energy to underserved communities. The NDP voted in FAVOR of having a public option to promote competition and keep costs down. Turning over the power generation to private companies does not expand competition, it lowers it. It means there will be companies that have almost total control over particular markets, particularly rural markets. I submit for the record the vote of the NDP to promote REAL competition in power generation: http://classic.particracy.net/viewbill.php?billid=568968 I'll let the regressives vote however they want, but the fact of the matter is that this legislation is an attempt to pull the rug out from underneath hard-working Talmorians. And the Government should be ashamed for pretending that this is an actual policy position. |

| Message | Mr. Speaker, The bill you referenced had more than one article. Our support for the bill was conditional to some of the other articles. In short yes we voted for the increased public sector involvement in energy creation, but will we did not nessecarily agree with the measure we were willing to accept it so that Transit subsidies could be provided and so that our infrastructure could be improved though the bill’s public works article. Additionally, we’ve supported measures to fund energy subsidies to low-income communities as well as anti-monoploy measures. We are curious to know how providing additional options in regard to energy providers will “pull the rug out from underneath,” as you say. Energy subsidies remain the same for the poor and increased competition will lower energy prices. Again, energy subsidies and regulations remain unchanged. We are removing government funds from running its own energy production services when it can be placed into energy subsidies for poor Talmorians. |

| Message | Bonaparte Desrosiers, Leader of the Congress of the Left: Mr. Speaker, How is removing the state as a player INCREASING competition? Call this what it is. It's a bribe to the regressive elements of the Government just so that the NDP can hold power. There is nothing in this legislation that is providing additional options- merely taking them away. Either costs are high and these companies are profitable- in which case we are NOT spending money running energy companies and making a profit- or having a public option here is keeping costs and prices low through encouraging competition. To suggest anything else is foolish. |
