Message | Honorable Speaker, esteemed colleagues, I rise today in support of the proposals put forward to change the government policy concerning nationality, immigration, refugee policy, and travel by foreigners to our nation. These proposals represent a significant shift towards a more inclusive, welcoming, and equitable society. The first proposal suggests that anyone should be able to claim nationality, which is a fundamental right that should be accessible to all individuals regardless of their origin or immigration status. Denying someone the ability to claim nationality based on arbitrary requirements is a violation of their human rights. The second proposal advocates for a fair and just immigration policy that is based on individual applicant qualifications rather than quotas. This ensures that every individual is given a fair opportunity to be considered for immigration based on their individual merits rather than being excluded due to arbitrary quotas. The third proposal emphasizes that all refugees should be welcomed, regardless of their reason for seeking refuge. We must remember that refugees are fleeing from dire circumstances and should not be denied aid based on their reason for leaving their homeland. It is our duty as a nation to provide a safe haven for all those who seek it, and this proposal is a step towards fulfilling that duty. Lastly, the fourth proposal suggests that the nation should impose minimal border controls on visitors, with cursory security checks, to confirm visitor identities. This proposal balances the need for security with the need for welcoming visitors to our nation. In conclusion, I urge my colleagues to support these proposals and embrace a more inclusive and equitable society. Let us stand together in support of human rights and the principles of justice and equality. Thank you. Sarah Limpish, MP. |
