Bill: Ratification of the Global Emancipation Treaty

Details

Submitted by[?]: Conservative People's Party

Status[?]: defeated

Votes: This bill proposes for the ratification of a treaty. It will require two-thirds of the legislature to vote in favor[?]. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.

Voting deadline: November 3708

Description[?]:

This bill asks for the ratification of the Global Emancipation Treaty. If this treaty is ratified, it becomes binding and will define national law.

Since slavery and the slave trade has been illegal for ages in Hutori, we believe it would be in our best interest to have this safeguard, in case a regime may come to power that tries to reinstate this horrible practice.

Or, Mr Speaker, is this more unnecessary regulation, as you may put it?

MessageRt Hon Harold Clarke MP, HCP Leader,

Mr Speaker, has the member opposite got nothing better to do with his free time than judgementally quote legislation from around 650 years ago? If he had bothered to learn the historical context of the situation, he would have realised that it was the 'Hutorian National Party' which introduced such a law, and the HCP has long since reformed from that guise.

MessageRt Hon Harold Clarke MP, HCP Leader,

Mr Speaker, the Hutorian Conservative Party is largely opposed to these types of treaties which limit the capacity of our Parliament. However given the subject matter held within this treaty we shall break with our tradition of voting against such measures and we will choose to abstain from this vote.

MessageMr Speaker, we respect the opposition's choice to abstain on this matter. The Shed Party in the past has repealed many treaties that restricted the Parliament (or the former Congress) and does not like to use treaties unless absolutely necessary. We believe that slavery is a vile practice that should not be allowed in our borders, and that is why we have broken our tradition for this bill. While we wish the HCP would vote for our bill or at least clearly condemn slavery in this debate, we recognize the opposition is free to vote as it pleases.
