Description[?]:
Political Compass: Economic: -5.25 Social: -4.10 Mainline social democrats with a federalist tilt. We accept that the free market, for all of its flaws and injustices, must form the basic engine of any nation's economy; that is, the rule rather than the exception. Given the records of the alternatives, this is not so much a choice as a concession to reality. However, the SFP also recognizes several areas, such as health care and infrastructure, where allowing free market rule would amount to a gross neglect of the government's duties to the citizenry. Additionally, the activities of otherwise healthy and productive industries may have negative externalities associated with them, externalities that are sufficiently disconnected from their products in time and space that the market does not attach their full cost to these products. Such duties must also be taken up by the government. Finally, an unregulated free market is dangerously vulnerable to boom-bust cycles which not only impoverish a great number of people but in this also creates its own as well as the nation's worst enemy in popular discontent. Government counts among its many tasks that of dampening an economy's booms and busts, rounding off its roughest edges and accepting a level of inefficiency as an acceptable trade-off for such safeguards. In short, the free market is the most dependable engine for long-term economic growth and technological advancement to the benefit of the greatest number of people, but it can also be both one-sided and, paradoxically, short-sighted. Government exists partially to make up for these lapses. As far as individual social rights, the SFP adopts a broadly liberal, secular view. Government does not exist to legislate morality insofar as it concerns only the individual. Along this vein, the SFP maintains a firmly scientific, rational view of the world, and wholly rejects reasoning based on religious or otherwise non-scientific revelation or interpretation. |
