Description[?]:
OOC: The NDP has inactivated. I have moved to Tukarali. If you wish to find me, I am now the Aliança dos Liberais e Progressistas - http://classic.particracy.net/viewparty.php?partyid=18024. The New Democratic Party is a libertarian-leaning centrist party which stands for: 1) Reducing the size of government and instead using private enterprise to provide services, 2) Reducing taxes, regulation and the influence of unions to allow the free market to operate, 3) Responsible spending by the government, which should never run a deficit except in times of crisis, 4) A minimum wage and health care support for the poor to ensure that they do not fall through the cracks, 5) Greater civil liberties and giving people the right to follow their own values and celebrating diversity, 6) Ensuring that everyone is equal under the law and preventing segregation or discimination, 7) Centralisation of government powers to ensure greater fairness, 8) A secular society built upon reason, and 9) Greater diplomatic engagement with foreign countries to ensure peace, while always putting Zardugal first. The NDP was founded in 3321 to provide the citizens of Zardugal with an alternative to the conservatism of the Conservative Republican Party and the socialism of the Federalist Party and National Popular Front. The NDP is led in Congress by the Congressional Leader of the NDP: 1) Patrick Davis, 3321 - 3322 Patrick Davis, a former civil rights lawyer, founded the NDP in 3321. He would shape the ideology of the NDP by supporting privatisation of the government, a minimum wage, greater freedom of religion while restricting the role of religion in society and the banning of conscription except in times of war. Davis resigned as NDP Leader after just one year due to a stroke. He died shortly after. 2) Benjamin Sims, 3322 - 3327 Ben Sims, previously a Professor of Economics at the prestigious University of Belgae, was one of the earliest members of the NDP and became its Deputy Leader and Senior Spokesman for Finance. After the resignation of Davis, Sims was became Leader of the NDP. In late 3323, he won for the NDP their first representation in Congress, although he shortly lost his Congressional majority. Still, he managed to become Prime Minister, presiding over a coalition cabinet of the NDP and the NPF. He tried to liberalise the economy and reduce the power of unions while supporting initatives to establish a safety net for the poor. He supported fiscal restraint and greater freedoms for the people of Zardugal. After the disastrous electoral defeat of 3327, he resigned from the leadership of the NDP. 3) Michael Dowdy, 3327 - 3341 A former diplomat, Michael Dowdy joined the NDP at the very beginning and became its Senior Spokesman for Foreign Affairs. He would become the Deputy Leader of the NDP in 3322 when Ben Sims rose to the leadership, and became the Foreign Minister after the NDP entered government in 3324. He became the Leader of the NDP after Ben Sims resigned, and Prime Minister shortly after. In the election of December 3329, he won a majority of the seats in the Congress. Like his predecessor, he cut government spending and taxes significantly, and increased the rights of the Zardic people. He has been working for greater secularisation and the legalisation of cannabis and abortions. In January 3331, Dowdy was forced to ask President Karen Sosa to declare war on Badara after it invaded Zardugal's ally, Kafuristan. In 3332, he entered into a coalition cabinet with the CRP to form a national unity government due to the war, forfeiting his Premiership for the sake of national unity, before regaining it shortly after. Dowdy won the elections at the end of 3332, and guided the nation through the rest of the war. During the war, he played an active role in planning military and diplomatic strategy along with Darren Nicholson, Brian Johnston and General James Fulcher. At the end of 3335, Dowdy organised the Venetium peace conference to resolve the Great Majatran War. After the end of the war, he began to privatise goverment entities such as the space agency. 4) Darren Nicholson, 3341 - 3344 Nicholson, like his predecessor, became a high-level diplomat at a fairly young age, and was also one of the founding members of the NDP. In 3327, he became the Foreign Minister after Dowdy became the Prime Minister. Overshadowed by Finance Minister Nick Allen for a few years, he came under the spotlight of world attention as tension between Kafuristan and al'Badara built up, then erupted into war. He would prove instrumental in creating the diplomatic links that helped Zardugal prevail over the enemy, and was also partly responsible for the successful conclusion of the war. He became Deputy Leader in 3332 as a reward for his performace, and also because of Nick Allen's old age, and Leader in 3341 after Dowdy announced his retirement. Unfortunately, he lost the election of 3341, and became the Leader of the Opposition. During his two-year tenure, he took an active role in scrutinising government policy by persuading the other parties to establish the practice of Prime Minister's Questions. In the election of 3344, his poor performance led to a spill motion against him. He was replaced by Cody Vanderheyden. In the wake of his defeat, he successfully challenged John Carey for the deputy leadership, and returned to the head of the Foreign Ministry shortly after. Nicholson returned to the leadership in 3347 after further electoral losses under Vanderheyden's leadership. In the election of February 3350, the NDP lost more seats, and Nicholson only barely managed to prevent another spill motion against his leadership. With the departure of the ZLP soon after, new elections were called for June 3350. This would prove to be the NDP's largest electoral victory ever, with the party winning 75% of the seats in Congress. Nicholson became Prime Minister. He resigned due to old age in 3353. 5) Cody Vanderheyden, 3344 - 3347 Vanderheyden joined the NDP shortly after its founding, and was fielded as a candidate in the election of January 3327. Aged 21, he became the second-youngest member of Congress upon his inauguration. Despite his youth, he was soon recognised as one of the most able debaters and policy-makers in the NDP. In 3332, he became the Assistant Minister for the Police under the Interior Ministry, and was promoted to Deputy Interior Minister in 3336. Having made himself into one of the most significant political figures within the NDP by attracting the support of younger members, he became the Interior Minister in 3340, and Shadow Interior Minister shortly after as a result of the electoral defeat of the NDP. After leading the NDP into its third-worst electoral debacle, NDP Leader Darren Nicholson was challenged for the leadership by both Vanderheyden and Deputy Leader John Carey. The vote was tied, but Nicholson resigned, and Vanderheyden became the youngest NDP Leader at 38, and also the first (with the exception of Davis) to becomde Leader without first becoming Deputy Leader. The NDP joined the CRP and ZLP in a national unity government as a result of the Great Dovani War, and received the major posts of Finance and Foreign Minister. After he lost a significant number of seats at the election of 3347, doubts about his youth resurfaced, and, facing a spill motion, Vanderheyden returned Nicholson's favour and resigned. However, when Nicholson resigned in 3353, the leadership returned to him. The disastrous performance of the NDP in the elections, however, resulted in his ouster in favour of James Perrault. 6) Darren Nicholson, 3347 - 3353 See above. 7) Cody Vanderheyden, 3353 - 3353 See above. 8) James Perrault, 3353 - ? (incumbent) Perrault was the first NDP leader who did not join in the decade after its founding. Although his fiscal talent was noted shortly after being elected to Congress in 3338, the NDP leadership was reluctant to give him too much power, due to the influence of the old guard. This changed in the late 3340s, after several electoral defeats, when older members of Congess failed to win re-election. He became the Assistant Minister for Fiscal Policy. In 3350, a new batch of NDP freshmen were elected to Congress. The Leader, Darren Nicholson, was forced to promote many of the younger members, who now constituted the vast majority of the NDP Congressional Caucus. Perrault, while relatively experienced, was popular with the new members, and therefore became the Finance Minister. In 3353, after Nicholson's resignation, Cody Vanderheyden returned to the leadership unchallenged, and against his opposition, Perrault became the Deputy Leader. After the major defeat of 3353, the worst performance in NDP history, Vanderheyden was tossed out in preference to Perrault, 139 - 12. Perrault became Leader of the Opposition. The Congressional Leader is assisted by the Deputy Congressional Leader: 1) Benjamin Sims, 3321 - 3322 2) Michael Dowdy, 3322 - 3327 3) Nicholas Allen, 3327 - 3332 4) Darren Nicholson, 3332 - 3341 5) John Carey, 3341 - 3344 6) Darren Nicholson, 3344 - 3347 7) Cody Vanderheyden, 3347 - 3353 8) James Perrault, 3353 - 3353 9) Darryl Gabler, 3353 - ? (incumbent) Two NDP members have been elected President of Zardugal: 1) Wyatt Walker, 3324 - 3327 2) Karen Sosa, 3329 - 3341 Three NDP members have been elected Prime Minister of Zardgual: 1) Benjamin Sims, 3324 - 3327 2) Michael Dowdy, 3327 - 3332, 3332 - 3342 3) Darren Nicholson, 3350 - 3354 The NDP currently has 151 seats in Congress (out of 750). Random fact: When it comes to creating a Cultural Protocol in a Culturally Open nation, players are not necessarily required to provide a plausible backstory for how the nation's cultural background developed. However, the provision of a plausible backstory may be a factor in whether Moderation approves the Cultural Protocol if players in surrounding nations question its appropriateness for their region of the game map. |
