Description[?]:
The Social Democratic Union (SDU) was founded as the Communist Party of Luthori (CPL) in 4314. The Communist Party of Luthori was established by members of the Teachers' Union of Luthori and the Alliance of Medical Workers, both of which remain notable for being radical trade unions with left-wing sympathies. During its formation, Metzism-Leonidism (Marxism-Leninism), Communism and Socialism were established as the party's guiding principles. Former head teacher, Chester Greerson, was elected General Secretary of the Communist Party of Luthori, a position which he held for 16 years. In early 4316 the Social Democratic Party, which had rivalled the Communists for the left-wing vote, was suddenly disbanded and many of its politicians and members joined the Communist Party of Luthori. This marked the introduction and growth of social democratic and centre-left ideas within the party and led to the emergence of distinct internal factions. In late 4330, Chester Greerson, the General Secretary of the Communist Party of Luthori, passed away. This created a power vacuum and brought about public infighting between left-wing and centre-left factions within the party. Furthermore, all of the party's political activites stopped during this period and its parliamentary representatives resigned in protest. Months later in 4331 the internal divisions ceased and the Communist Party of Luthori became the Social Democratic Union. The name was chosen to reflect the party's move from the far-left towards a moderate centre-left platform and to broaden its electoral appeal. It was felt that the name change would soften its image and attract floating centrist voters. Under its new leader, Gladys Armstrong, traditional commitments to Metzism-Leonidism (Marxism-Leninism), Communism and Socialism were replaced by Social democracy and Progressivism. In addition, the party dropped its opposition to the monarchy and also switched to a pro-Artanian position regarding Luthori's membership of the Artanian Union.
