Description[?]:
The Republican Party was formed by disparate right-wing groups in June 4907 to compete against the two-left wing parties that had alternated in government in Baltusia for the previous twenty years. At the first Presidential and Congressional election that the Republican Party competed in September 4908 the Party secured over 70% of the vote, winning the Presidency and securing a two-thirds majority in Congress. In the hundred years since 4908 the Republican Party has dominated Baltusian politics, controlling the Presidency for 65 of the 95 years between 4908-5003 and forming the government for most of this period. Although the Republicans formed the only right-wing party for most of the 4900's, in the 4990's several other centre-right and far-right parties emerged in Baltusia, reducing the Republican Party share of the vote. The Republicans remain the largest and oldest right-wing party in Baltusia. == Leadership The Party is effectively leaderless although significant individuals within the Party include the President of Baltusia (if elected), the Majority or Minority Leader of the Party in Congress and successful Gubernatorial candidates. Prior to Presidential elections the Republican Party runs a primary campaign to allow the supporters of the Party to choose the Presidential candidate. === Presidents The Republicans dominated Presidential elections during the 4900's, holding the Presidency for 65 of the 95 years between 4908 and 5003. Between 4908 and 5003 the Republican Party have been in government for 73 of the 95 years, and was the lead party in government for 71 of these 73 years. == Ideology The Republican Party was historically a big tent right-wing party committed to; - A strong military - Separation of Church and State, but with the explicit caveat that all should be free to practice their Hosian faith. The party is strongly supportive of the religious right. - Isolationism, the party doesn’t care for international affairs or immigrants - Baltusia’s “Baltusian” (read “Luthorian”) heritage. At times segregationist and white nationalist. - Pro-business but keen on welfare and strong trade unions - Social conservatism In the 4990's the party shed much of its far-right support. The Republicans became a more pragmatic centre-right party, working in coalition governments with the Sunflower Alliance, Baltusian Conservatives and centre-left Central Party. = Support Base The Republican Party draws it support from the following groups - Business elites - Evangelical Hosians - Baltusian nationalists - Social conservatives - The agricultural community and those who live in rural areas. Alternatively, the Republican Party has historically performed poorly amongst non-whites, members of the Aurorian Patriarchal Church and those with no religious background. In the 4990's the Republican electoral coalition began to fragment, dropping from 44% of the vote in 4988 to 21% of the vote in 5000. Moderate and pro-business elites shifted to the Sunflower Alliance and the Baltusian Conservative Party, while nationalist and far-right elements shifted to the Libertarian Party and the National Movement. =History ==Formation (4908) The Republican Party was formed by disparate right-wing groups in June 4907 to compete against the two-left wing parties that had alternated in government in Baltusia for the previous twenty years. At the first Presidential and Congressional election that the Republican Party competed in September 4908 the Party secured over 70% of the vote, winning the Presidency and securing a two-thirds majority in Congress. ==Dominance (4908-4935) After its explosive win in the 4908 Presidential and Senate the Republicans dominated Baltusian politics for a 25 year period. During this time the Republicans were able to radically reshape the country in a more conservative direction, implementing legislation to encourage the free market. In 4913 the Republicans implemented segregation across the country (http://classic.particracy.net/viewbill.php?billid=641708), laws that weren't officially rescinded until 4929 (http://classic.particracy.net/viewbill.php?billid=643894). Republican dominance was ended after the formation of the Democratic Conservative Party in 4928, which in three elections successfully reduced the Republican vote and disorganised the party to such an extent that it struggled through the 4930's. ==Opposition (4935-4945) The period 4935 to 4945 represented a low point in Republican Party history. Through ten years and six elections the party repeatedly failed to defeat its Socialist opponents. The Party was stuck between 43-48% and was confined to opposition at the national level. ==Collapse and rebirth (4945-4950) After another electoral defeat the Republican Party collapsed and ceased to function at the national level. During this time the governing Socialist Unity Party implemented a series of legislation that enacted a Socialist state, including changing the flag and the name of Baltusia from the United States to the United Socialist Republic. ==Curschmann era (4950-4978) ==Second collapse and rebirth (4978-4984) ==Multiparty era (4984-5004) The Republican Party had always considered itself a big-tent right wing party an had typically. However from 4988 onwards a series of faction within the party broke away to form the centre-right Sunflower Alliance and the far-right Libertarian Party. Further splits occurred in the late 4990' and by the time of the 5000 elections the Republicans were merely the largest of five parties covering the right-wing spectrum. ==Centre-right alliance (5004 onwards- |
