Description[?]:
A social democratic party committed to open and accountable government, whose aim is to provide a society in which every Solentian citizen can reach their full potential. We believe in social justice and a society in which all can share in our great nation's prosperity. NOTABLE MEMBERS --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Supreme Presidents: Malcolm Johnston 2980-2983 Junichi Shimizu 2992-2995 Senate Wardens: Walton Laboissonnier 2980-2992 Janet Christensen 2994-2996 PARTY MANIFESTO (under construction) --------------------------------------------------------------------------- GOVERNMENT ADMINISTRATION --------------------------------------------------------------------------- -A legislature elected through proportional representation, elected by politically enrolled Solentian citizens 18 years and older. -A non-hereditary elected head of state -Direct community participation in the legislative process through citizen initiated referenda and community hall meetings. -The continuation of the Federation. -The largest party or largest coalition of parties should form cabinet, as the respective parties collectively see fit. If there is more than one party in cabinet they are not bound to vote the same way during the legislative process. -All aspects of government such as the legislature, head of state, ministries, elections and election campaigns are to be publicly funded to reduce the potential for corruption. MILITARY --------------------------------------------------------------------------- -The SDLP is an essentially pacifist party, we only support military action when it is in defence of Solentia or a genuinely oppressed nation -We are against the construction and use of biological, chemical or nuclear weaponry. We are also against the use of land mines -Any adult (male or female) Solentian competent and willing to serve in the military, regardless of their background should be admitted -We accept the practical need to have an Intelligence Agency, however this should only be used to scrutinise any potential threats against the Federal Republic -We believe in the separation of the police and military forces -Conscription should be a measure of last resort, for instance, where Solentia is under foreign invasion. -Prisoners of War must be treated humanely. -The selling of weapons to anyone is not supported by the SDLP. HEALTH --------------------------------------------------------------------------- -We believe that the right to life is a fundamental human right and support a free and advanced universal healthcare system, with private clinics for those who wish to use them -We support low-cost pharmaceuticals -Abortions should be only performed where the mother's life is at risk, the SDLP considers other abortions as a crime. We believe that our government should provide free or low-cost contraception -Alcohol is permitted but should be taxed significantly and to be only consumed by those over 18 years of age -Where someone is deemed terminally ill by a doctor euthanasia may be considered -All processed foods should have nutritional labelling and a list of chemicals or pesticides used -We do not support the act of drug taking but do not believe it is the governments right to intervene in such matters -We strongly support the promotion of vaccinations, however we believe it should remain voluntary EMPLOYMENT AND ECONOMICS --------------------------------------------------------------------------- -There should be the provision of a minimum living wage -We support the trade unions and their role to negotiate fair pay and conditions for Solentians. Trade Union membership should however remain voluntary -A strike should occur by ballot of the respective union -We support 5 weeks annual leave (pro-rata), of which one week may be sold to the employer at the employees discretion -10 days sick, compassionate and bereavement leave which will not be paid out if not used -A 40-hour week, overtime and weekend/weeknight shift loadings -12% Superannuation to be paid by employer on top of earnings -Casual employees will not receive the above benefits however will be paid an extra 30% and may refuse any shift -No taxes on essential basic items should be applied -Gambling is to be heavily regulated with only 1 casino per state and national loterries and betting permitted, returns at casinos should be at a minimum of 45% on average. -Stock Exchanges are permitted but must be regulated to prevent insider trading and that they operate in good faith EDUCATION --------------------------------------------------------------------------- -we support increased funding for pre-school facilities -a well funded and free public education system alongside private education with both being required to teach a basic national curriculum, however private schools may choose to teach subjects outside of this provided it is not at the expense of reaching national benchmarks -ensure that schools who operate for private profit do not receive government funding -subsidize the cost of tertiary and technical education from between 25% and 99% depending on the training being provided. -ensure that such costs be paid back through no interest loans and only when a certain salary has been reached -ensure that tertiary entrance is based on educational merit only -provide a tertiary or technical student allowance to ensure they can better concentrate on their education |
