Description[?]:
NATIONAL UNION Party president: Lt.-General Albert José Mena de Aguado Founded in: 2080 Party Headquarters: National Union's General Headquarters, Imperial Street 87, Alindoria. Group leader in the Imperial Senate: Count Albert de Bastiat Number of members in the Imperial Senate: 48 Party members: 73.428 Party policies: * The National Union believe a Monarchy is the most fair and stable system for our great nation. *The National Union is strongly opposed to separatism and supports a centralized state. * The National Union believes in freedom for the individual. We believe in a strong economy, with less regulation and lower taxes. * The National Union believe in a strong military, as a deterrent to communist warmongors. * The National Union is a great defender of human rights and civil liberties. The National Union is the oldest party currently active in the Empire of Endralon. It was originally founded in 2080 by right wing students, higher military and industrialists in order to voice their concern about the rising Socialist Commonwealth of Endralon, which had just separated from the Motherland. The respectable bourgeois party became a more radical party after an inner-party coup overthrew the conservative leadership which consisted of ministers, governors and captains of industry. They were soon replaced by far right young people and lead by a charismatic general. The National Union formed a bloc with the Imperial Party, another far right party, and Common Sense, a populist party. The nationalist bloc won the elections and formed a cabinet, lead by the National Union leader. National Union militia and the Imperial Party's gangs roamed the street and tried to cleanse the state of communists, which were prosecuted for crimes against the state. An invasion of the Socialist Commonwealth of Endralon became the prime objective for National Union's military leaders but universal condemnation drove the nationalist bloc from power in the next elections. The NU Leaders were arrested and imprisoned. Following the trial and conviction of many of NU's presidium for corruption and even treason, the party that was left quickly lost support throughout society. After the last NU members of parliament were not re-elected, rivalling factions within the party started the struggle for leadership in the dying party. Members fled the party, and by 2400 the party that once had more then half a million militant campaigners fell back to no more then several hundred members. The majestic headquarters in the centre of Alindoria were sold, and provisional offices was installed above a bookshop outside the city. After many years of politics in the margins of Endralonian society, the National Union finally found a new and charismatic leader in Lt-General Albert José Mena de Aguado. Albert is the oldest son of José Mena de Aguado Sr., one of the last party presidents of the old age, the age of the respectable party, the age of liberty and of the monarchy... Like his father, Albert chose a military carreer and became Lt.-General in the Imperial Army. After the abolition of the monarchy, Albert chose to pursue a political carreer. Unlike the other talented young men in Endralon's political scene, he didn't chose to join one of the major party's, but joined the movement his father was once so proud of - the National Union. Aguado is a charismatic leader and it was refreshing for the veteran party members that he succeded in exciting the masses with his arrousing speeches. His friends incited him to run for president of the party, which he reluctantly accepted in 2418. He won in a landslide victory, with over 90 per cent of the vote and it became clear that things were bound to change. In the year that he has been president, membership rose from 850 to 27.000 and more and more are willing to follow Aguado in his epic quest: "For the first time in many, many years NU-candidates shall be elected for parliament again!". Today, National Union is a new party, determined to reclaim its place in Endralonian history. In the 2419 general election, 34 NU members marched into Parliament against, receiving 6 per cent of the popular vote. It was a small victory, but an important one. The National Union existed again. Still it was dangerous for the small party though. Only six per cent of the people had voted for the nationalist party, and the financial situation was still not what it once was. For years, the NU kept receiving 6 to 7 per cent of the vote, bu in 2424, the party was suddenly invited into a coalition government of free market-leaning parties. Lt.-General Mena de Aguado became foreign minister of Endralon, and Lord Bob Vangeel became the new chairman of the party. Thanks to his leadership, the consistent libertarian laws of the NU and the remarkable work of Mena de Aguado the NU won its first great victory in 2426 when it received 48 seats in Parliament. Finally, the NU was a real party again. After many years of incertainty, poverty and even desperation, the National Union was no longer insecure, nor politically, nor financially, and it decided to sell the trusted old office above Ye Aulde Book Shoppe. It was on the fifteenth of August, a marvellous day, that the party presidency entered the new NU Headquarters in the centre of Alindoria. The younger party members didn't understand, but the old guard remembered: this was the very same old office building were the NU was once founded, where it prospered and where it perished. The National Union lived again. |
