=Overview= The Independence Party was founded in August 4410 following the collapse of the National Union (http://classic.particracy.net/viewparty.php?partyid=34542) which had formed the previous government of Telamon. In February 4412 the party was renamed the Republican Party. The Republican Party is broadly a liberal-conservative party, although has right-wing, centrist and Hosian Democrat factions. From 4415 the Republicans have formed a governing coalition with the Progressive Party. Although the two parties broadly agree on a number of social, economic, defence and foreign policy issues, the Republicans are considered the more right-wing party and the Progressives the more left-wing. In September 4417 Berglind Ásgeirsdóttir led the Republicans to a landslide electoral victory. Key policies prior to the election had been to continue tor reduce the size and the role of the government in peoples lives, while pursuing a robust defence policy.. =Leadership= The Republican Party has had the following leaders.
