Freedom Party

“Liberty is not a means to a political end. It is itself the highest political end.” – Lord Acton

The Freedom Party’s political philosophy can be summed up in one word, Liberty, in our eyes, just as in Lord Action’s, liberty is the highest political end and should be the fundamental philosophy on which policies and laws are made. For the Freedom Party, unlike others, liberty means freedom, not freedom from want, or freedom from poverty as socialist parties continue to state are freedoms, but freedom to live your life how you see fit as long as you do not initiate force against anyone else. Our view of freedom is best summed up by John Stuart Mill:

“The only freedom which deserves the name, is that of pursuing our own good in our way, so long as we do not attempt to deprive others of theirs, or impede their efforts to obtain it.”

This philosophy on life and liberty underline our beliefs and policies on what constitutes good government and what it is that the government should be responsible for in a nation. Thomas Jefferson best summed up our views on good government:

“A wise and frugal government which shall restrain men from injuring one another, which shall leave them otherwise free to regulate their own pursuits of industry and improvement, and shall not take from the mouth of labour the bread it has earned. This is the sum of good government.”

The Philosophy of Liberty is the reason that we as a party are strong and powerful advocates of free market economic policies, miniscule taxes, and minimal regulation of industry. The free market is the great leveller and provides great equality of opportunity. One of its greatest virtues was summed up by Milton Friedman:

“The great virtue of a free market system is that it does not care what colour people are; it does not care what their religion is; it only cares whether they can produce something you want to buy. It is the most effective system we have discovered to enable people who hate one another to deal with one another and help one another.”

The Freedom Party has strong and defined views on welfare and social security. We are opposed to it in nearly all circumstances. As Thomas Jefferson once said;

“Dependence leads to subservience.”

We are opposed to most forms of welfare and social security on the basis that it is legal plunder, taking from one group of people merely to give to another group of people without the consent of the former. Legal plunder, or legalised theft, is tyranny and as Robert Heinlein said;

“There is no worse tyranny than to force a man to pay for what he does not want merely because you think it would be good for him”

The Freedom Party believe in a private education system, free from state control and government interference. In our view, Benjamin Disraeli was correct when he stated that the best way to enforce obedience is to commence tyranny in the nursery. It is no coincidence that the best performing schools in countries with state education come from those schools that are free from government control. Those opposed to private education reason that they oppose it because those who are unable to afford the fees will not receive an education and this puts equality of opportunity at risk and disadvantages the poor. This is true, however, as Milton Friedman wryly pointed out:

“If the only motive was to help people who could not afford education, advocates of government involvement would have simply proposed tuition subsidies.”

This is why we, the Freedom Party, recognising that education is vital to a prosperous Rutania and that the poor may not have access in a privately run education system, support the existence of government vouchers and tuition subsidies to allow the children of poor families to attend unregulated, well run, and better performing privately owned schools.

“I may not agree with what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.” – Voltaire
